A Newtonian Explanation Without Light Speed

 

When Io, Jupiter’s moon, disappears into shadow and reemerges, it presents an optical dance that has captivated astronomers since the 1600s. The most famous interpretation came from Ole Rømer in 1676, who saw shifts in Io’s eclipse timing and concluded that light must take time to travel.

But everything Rømer observed can be fully and accurately explained using Newtonian physics alone, without ever requiring light to travel at a speed.

What Are We Seeing?

What we see is this: Io passes behind Jupiter and is hidden by its shadow. The timing of that disappearance and reappearance appears to change based on Earth’s position in its orbit. But this is not a change in Io, it is a change in geometry.

 

Everything visible in that motion can be described by:
1. Orbital mechanics (Io around Jupiter)

2. Heliocentric positioning (Earth and Jupiter in motion)

3. Shadow projection (light occlusion)

4. Angular observation (how Earth’s angle alters what we see)

     

    How Newtonian Physics Accounts for it

    1. Orbital Motion of Io:
      – Newton’s law of gravitation explains why Io orbits Jupiter with a regular period (~1.769 days).

      – No need for any velocity of light to define this motion.
    2. Earth-Jupiter Positioning:
      – Newton’s laws model elliptical orbits of Earth and Jupiter.

      – The varying Earth–Jupiter distance accounts for the shifting angle of observation.

      – Timing differences in Io’s reemergence are a geometric consequence of Earth’s motion, not of light delay.
    3. Shadow Geometry:
      – Newton’s optics defined how shadows form behind opaque objects.

      – Jupiter casts a measurable umbra and penumbra.

      – Io disappears and reappears within that predictable zone.
    4. Apparent Timing Shift:
      – When Earth moves toward Jupiter, the light path shortens and we see Io’s reappearance earlier.

      – When Earth moves away, the path lengthens, we see it later.

      But the delay is not proof of light’s movement, it is a projection effect based on our changing viewpoint.

     

    What Newton Did Not Do

    Newton did not attempt to prove light had speed. He accepted Rømer’s interpretation decades later in the Principia, but by then, the geometrical, orbital and optical tools were already in place.

    In truth, Newton had already given us everything necessary to model Io’s eclipse timing purely through structure and motion, without delay.

     

    Final Summary

    Io’s eclipse events, what Rømer interpreted as light delay, are completely resolvable through Newtonian physics. The shadow, the orbits, the timing, all fall into place with gravity, optics and motion.

    The assumption that light’s delay explains the shift was not science. It was interpretation.
