Introduction

This document establishes precise definitions for the terms “nuclear” and “atomic” as they are used in the nucleosynthesis series. The goal is to prevent category errors that arise when atomic phenomena are used to assert nuclear history. Nuclear synthesis and atomic behavior belong to different domains. Confusing either misrepresents both.

Nuclear

Nuclear refers to processes that act on the atomic nucleus. Nuclear processes involve changes to the number or arrangement of protons and neutrons, resulting in the formation or transformation of atomic nuclei.

Examples include fusion, fission, neutron capture and radioactive decay. Nucleosynthesis is a nuclear process.

Operational test: if the nucleus changes, the process is nuclear.

Definition

Atomic

Atomic refers to structures and behaviors that occur around an already-existing nucleus. Atomic processes involve electrons, energy levels, excitation, emission, absorption and ionization without altering the nucleus itself.

Examples include hydrogen alpha emission, spectral line displacement, excitation and recombination and all forms of red shifting.

Operational test: if the nucleus does not change, the process is atomic.

Verb VS Noun Distinction

Nuclear processes are fundamentally verbal in nature: they describe formation or transformation. Atomic behavior is fundamentally nominal: it describes configuration and response within an existing structure.

Boundary Rule for the Series

Nucleosynthesis concerns nuclear processes only. Atomic observations may describe present conditions, but they do not, by themselves, establish nuclear formation history. Any attempt to use atomic behavior as evidence of nuclear origin introduces additional assumptions that must be stated explicitly.
