Block Structure Proves
the 22-Minute Accumlution
is Not a Direct Measurement
of Light Travel

Introduction

This document establishes, directly and without qualification, what the surviving observations of Ole Rømer actually support.

The observational record is not continuous. It is incomplete, irregular, block-sampled and partially reconstructed. It includes observations from multiple sources and corrected times. The 1676 publication does not provide a full derivation of the 22-minute result. This is the condition of the record.

Rømer recorded the timing of Io emerging from Jupiter’s shadow as observed from Earth. He did not measure motion through space. He did not measure transmission. He did not measure velocity. The record consists only of timing differences between observed events within a changing geometric configuration.

The strongest documented interval spans August 23, 1676 to November 9, 1676, covering approximately forty-four orbital intervals. The accumulated shift across this span is approximately ten minutes. This yields about thirteen to fourteen seconds per interval. This is the only solid numerical anchor directly tied to the record.

The record is block-based, not sequential. Observations occur in clusters separated by gaps. Many Io cycles were not observed. Comparisons are made across selected intervals, not every orbit. Any interpretation that treats the dataset as continuous is incorrect.

The reported twenty-two minute accumulation is not a direct measurement and not a continuous summation. It is a constructed accumulation across selected comparison intervals.

When the structure is treated correctly, the accumulation is expressed as block multiplication. Let N represent the number of measured comparison intervals. Dividing twenty-two minutes across approximately twenty-one to twenty-two intervals yields approximately one minute per interval.

This establishes that the twenty-two minute result arises from multiplying a per-interval shift across measured blocks, not from summing every physical Io emergence.

Two distinct interval scales exist and must not be confused. The documented forty-four interval block yields approximately thirteen seconds per interval. The comparison-based block structure yields approximately one minute per interval. These are different interval definitions arising from different sampling structures.

Once the block structure is acknowledged, the twenty-two minute result is no longer a direct observational measurement of a physical process. It is a constructed accumulation based on selected intervals.

Conclusion

From the record alone, there is no basis to claim that light traveled from Jupiter to Earth, that a propagation delay was measured or that a velocity was determined. Those are interpretations added after the fact.

Rømer measured timing differences of emergence events within a changing observational geometry. The twenty-two minute accumulation is the result of block-based multiplication across selected intervals. It is not a direct measurement of light travel.

If the record is treated as it actually exists, then the accumulation is a constructed result. Any claim that it uniquely demonstrates light travel goes beyond what the observations themselves establish.
