A water molecule is formed when two hydrogen atoms bond with one oxygen atom. But the molecule does not form a straight line. Due to the repulsion between lone electron pairs on the oxygen atom, the hydrogen atoms are pushed into a bent configuration, precisely 104.5°. This is not a chemical accident. This angle creates the dipole moment that gives water its unique polarity and responsiveness.
